    BEACH BOYS HAWTHORNE LANDMARK DEDICATION

A commemorative landmark plaque and monument was dedicated on May 20, 2005 at the site of the Hawthorne, CA house where the Wilson brothers grew up and The Beach Boys began as a group. Harry Jarnagan, with help from Paula Bondi-Springer, worked with the Hawthorne City Council and the state Historical Resources Commission to install the landmark plaque at 3701 W. 119th St. The project has the full support of the Wilson family, who were out in full force for the ceremony, as were the Jardines. Dennis' eldest son Scott Wilson provided construction services for the monument. About 1000 people attended the ceremony, which was hosted by Fred Vail and included speakers and musical performances. Brian Wilson and members of his current touring band sang "In My Room" and "Surfer Girl." Fellow Beach Boys Alan Jardine and David Marks were also there. David performed Dennis Wilson's song "You and I," accompanied by Billy Hinsche on keyboards and Dennis' grandson Matt Wilson on guitar. Alan reminisced about the early days and the Beach Boys' beginnings. All three Beach Boys unveiled the monument together. The house was torn down in the 1980s to make way for the Century Freeway (I-105). Custom engraved bricks were sold to help raise money for the landmark construction. Information on the Beach Boys landmark project can be found at their website.

The Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce still has some of the items available that were sold at the landmark dedication. You can purchase the pins, postcards, and envelopes. The pins/badges and postcards are color and say "Greetings from Hawthorne, Home of the Beach Boys." The envelopes are black and white and contain a flyer about the dedication. Both the postcards and the envelopes state that they're honoring the dedication of the Beach Boys California Historical Landmark, May 20, 2005. You can buy any combination of the 3 for $10, plus $3 shipping, and they reportedly accept credit card payments. Contact Susan Lanfre at 310-676-1163 or by email. (updated 4/13/05)

According to Jon's website, "David's perspective insures that the 'full' birth of the Beach Boys' story is being told for the first time. It will challenge many of the perceptions we previously had of his role in the band, and covers all aspects of a life that encountered despair, addiction and death -- yet lived to rejoin the band he walked away from at their initial peak." RICCI MARTIN'S THAT'S AMORE: A SON REMEMBERS
In his book That's Amore, Ricci Martin (Carl Wilson's brother-in-law) takes readers on a tour through his childhood, from the star-studded parties to the exploration of "three marriages, eight kids, one family" to the treasured one-on-one time he shared with his father, legendary actor/singer Dean Martin. That's Amore shares the triumphs, tragedies, and escapades that colored Ricci's childhood and reveals Dean as the husband and father few people knew. More than 100 photos from the private Martin family album enhance Ricci's portrait of his father, creating a complete, honest picture of the Rat Pack legend. Ricci also writes about The Beach Boys, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Billy Hinsche, Annie Wilson-Karges, and more familiar names to Beach Boys fans. For more information, please visit Ricci's website. All This Is That

    REMEMBERING THE MAHARISHI
Mike Love and Alan Jardine have both released statements on the passing of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

    Mike Love's Statement:
While in Paris participating in a UNICEF benefit show, the Beach Boys were introduced to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. That was in December of 1967. Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Alan Jardine and myself along with several family members learned the TM technique from Maharishi himself. Two months later, I made the journey to Rishi Kesh, India, where Donovan and the Beatles also attended a teacher's training course. Alan and I both became teachers of TM a couple years later.
blankspacerTo say that what I have learned from Maharishi has been of great benefit to me is an understatement to be sure. Maharishi has designed a pathway of development of human potential, which includes transcendental mediation, the TM-Sidhi program, Maharishi Ayurveda, Jyotish, and Yagyas -- all derived directly from the Earth's most ancient text, The Vedas.
blankspacerNo less a goal than that of world peace was Maharishi's life's work. For those of us who were fortunate enough to have been in his presence, his passing is profoundly sad. But I for one, am among the millions who are grateful for what he shared with us on this, "The Dawn of the Age of Enlightenment" on the way to the goal which Maharishi called "Heaven on Earth." We will miss you, but your great light will shine on.

Jai Guru Dev, Michael E. Love

    Al Jardine's Statement:

I am saddened by this great man's passing. He helped to enlighten me and my family to the value of transcendental meditation. He hoped to enlighten the world, but said that it must start with each individual, the family, the community, and then entire nations.
blankspacer He would chastise me in a kind way if I stayed away too long, "Where have you been?" And of course I could not think of a single good answer, because being in his presence made one feel like a complete idiot for staying away too long.
blankspacer He left me with a tool to deal with life and its complexities. For that I will always be greatful, and whenever I'm dipping into that "pool of peace inside," I will always think of him.

    Jai Guru Dev, Al Jardine

    About BBFC

The club was started by Alice, the president, in 1973, when she wrote to rock magazines expressing an interest in seeing more articles about the Beach Boys. After one of her letters was printed, several people contacted her about forming a club. Ads in Rolling Stone generated more membership; the first newsletter was published in 1976. The Beach Boys' promotional people took an interest, resulting in BBFC's becoming the official Beach Boys fan organization.

Basic membership is $5.00 ($8.00 in U.S. funds for overseas members). This includes five issues of our newsletter (published irregularly), with news and other information, tour dates, editorials, and an extensive classified section; membership card; and contact person for between-newsletter news.

    How to Join BBFC

    1. Write to the Beach Boys Fan Club, 50 S. Emery St. #4E, Pahrump, NV 89048.
    2. Or send our application form and $5 ($8 overseas) in check or money order to the address above. (You do not need to include an SASE when sending payment.)
